About Torch Ginger

A member of the ginger family, this exotic plant grew in my yard in Kona. Even its Latin botanical name, Etlingera elatior, sounds exotic.

Torch Ginger is an evergreen yet grows in warm, tropical climates.

The petals are waxy and sit on a single stalk 4' high. With a citrusy flavor, the petals are delicious in curry dishes or raw in salads.

The leaves grow on stalks over 12' high.
